Tragic Collision
At about 10:44 a.m. this morning a collision at the intersection of Granite Hills Drive and Washington Avenue caused a semi to plow into an oncoming vehicle, where it continued on through a fence into a backyard swimming pool. At the same moment, the homeowner was in the process of cleaning his pool directly in the path of the semi and was knocked into the pool. His two year-old daughter, who was also in the backyard, was unharmed.
According to witness reports, an adult female driver of a white van, who was traveling northbound on Granite Hills Drive reportedly ran the red light into the path of the semi, who was traveling westbound on Dehesa Road & Washington Avenue. The driver of the semi struck the van causing it to veer left striking another vehicle continung on through a fence and into the pool.
Passersby helped to pull the man from the pool alive, but he died a short time later at a local hospital. Two other people from a second vehicle that was hit, were also transported to the hospital with reportedly minor injuries. The truck driver was able to escape from his big rig and the pool on his own and received some minor cuts and abrasions. Another vehicle, being driven by a student driver in her twenties was also struck. She and her instructor were shaken up a bit but were not injured. The crash is still under investigation. The medical examiners office will release the name of the victim once his family has been notified.
The big rig has already been pulled from the pool and is now being examined by the CHP for any possible mechanical problems as part of the investigation.
Cleanup of the pool continues. The oil and about 80 gallons of diesel fuel and oil spilled into the pool from the rig. The San Diego Fire Department’s hazardous materials team was called to help with the cleanup.
Traffic control continues at the intersection of Granite Hills Drive and Washington Avenue, expect some delays.
