Fatal Trolley crash

March 14, 2008 -- Just before 12 noon today, at 11:53 a.m., a white pickup truck traveling eastbound on Billy Mitchell Drive collided with a south bound trolley at the Billy Mitchell crossing near Marshall. The solo elderly female driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene by El Cajon Firefighter-Paramedics. There were no injuries reported to passengers onboard the trolley.

The collision is being investigated by the El Cajon Police Department Traffic Division and MTS officials. Trolley service to the east section of the line is expected to be interrupted for several hours. Patrons that normally use the trolley are encouraged to find alternate means if possible. The final stop will be the Arnele Station. MTS will be providing bus service to the Cuyamaca stop.

The medical examiner arrived shortly after 2:00 p.m. to do their investigation and take possession of the female victim. Once they confirm her identity they will then notify family members before releasing her name. Shortly after the victim's body was removed, the victim's crushed vehicle was removed from the tracks and MTS officials took steps to remove the damaged trolley car. They will also inspect the rails of the trolley tracks for damage where the crash occurred.
