More Tips include:
Store emergency supplies at work, home and in the car; Such as; including first-aid kits, essential medicines, food, hand-operated can opener, portable radio, flashlights, extra batteries (in a water-tight plastic bag), and drinking water.
Keep some cash on hand because ATMs may not be working.
Keep your vehicle fueled - a gas station may not be accessible.
Keep sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting and other building materials handy for waterproofing.
During the storm:
Avoid areas that are subject to sudden flooding - don't try to cross a stream where water is above your knees; you could be swept away in water as low as 6 inches.
Don't try to drive over a flooded road - you could become stranded and trapped. If your vehicle stalls, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground. (Note: If you have to be rescued, after breaking the law and ignoring barricaded areas, you may have to pay for the entire cost of the emergency response.)
If you must travel, advise others of your destination and establish an out-of-area family contact so friends and relatives will know who to call to get information on your whereabouts.
Tune to local radio or television stations for emergency information - if evacuated, shut off electric circuits and gas and unplug electrical appliances.
After the storm:
Don't turn the gas back on yourself - rely on utility crews. Call S.D.G. & E.
Don't use fresh or canned foods that have been in contact with floodwaters.
Boil or purify drinking water if in doubt about its safety -- avoid downed power and gas lines and don't handle live electrical equipment in wet areas.
Use flashlights to examine buildings, not lanterns, matches or candles, because flammable materials may be inside.
